How To Increase Search Engine Traffic

So you want to learn how to increase search engine traffic to your website?

You know, it is amazing how so many people blow this WAY out of proportion and over-complicate things…

It is no wonder really, considering the information that is out there. From the SEO “freaks” out there who completely “geek out” and talk endlessly about latent semantic indexing and stemming; or how about the guys who speak of SEO as if it is some kind of “Black Magic”. (By the way, the same can be said for Keyword Research…)

My view on SEO and keywords research is that achieving increased search engine ranking and get a steady stream of traffic flowing to your site is not difficult. What it will take is some time and effort on your part.

Let me explain…

Believe it or not, there are only two primary things that you need to know about ranking well in the search engines, whether it’s Google, MSN Live or Yahoo:

1. On-Site OptimizationWhich consists of: the proper use of Title Tags; the use of h1 (and to a lesser extent h2 tags); the distribution of your keyword phrase(s); and using the “alt=” tag for images. What I have described here, by the way, is pretty much the only things that you need to pay specific attention to when optimizing content for your website.

2. Off-Site Optimization

This deals with getting links to your site. You should know that it is not a matter of having the MOST backlinks. It is about having the most relevant backlinks from “reputable” pages. Also, do not rely on only one method of link building. Diversify and use as many different methods that you can come up with. The key is to build the widest possible link profile in order for you to not leave “footprints” that the search engine algorithms can pick up on.

Anchor text should point to interior pages (deep links) as well as to your home page using long tail keywords (that are relevant to the page you are linking to).Having said all of this, I think what is even more important that basic SEO techniques is the completion of proper keyword and competition analysis (with an emphasis on the latter).

If you are trying to compete in a 1st Tier Keyword Phrase, like Weight Loss or Golf, you will need to up your ante and study SEO and put in a ton of work. But, if you work smart and pick 2nd Tier or even higher volume 3rd Tier keywords you have the opportunity to increase plenty of search engine traffic to your site.

Once you have determined the keywords, start checking your competitors in the search results (first page only) to see how difficult it is for you to knock them off their position. Here are a few more tips in regards to keyword research and competitive analysis to achieve a top position in Google:

  1. Be sure to check that your competitors use titles with the keyword phrase in question in them. If they do not, it is better for you.
  2. Check the Page Rank of every page that is on the first page of Google.
  3. Always check and do a bit more in-depth research on the pages that are in the 9th and 10th position. These are the pages you will be competing against as you get started.
  4. Do a backlink analysis of these two pages.

It is all about knowing what your competition is doing and doing it one better. In other words, if you do not have a target, how will you ever know what it will take to hit your mark?My recommendation:

  1. Learn how to evaluate competition for your keywords.
  2. Learn some basic seo techniques as it pertains to off-page optimization and and link building.

I hope this basic SEO primer was useful, and it is my sincere hope that you take action and increase search engine traffic to your web pages on demand.
